Patching and Crack Sealing

Austen Lehto heads Jennite’s crack sealing division.  His crews can crack seal residential drives, shopping malls, truck terminals and municipal streets and bridge decks.

About half of our crack sealing work is for our own blacktop sealing contracts.  The other half is for jobs calling for crack seal only, such as jobs like Franklin Park Mall and The Village of Maybee, Michigan roadways.

If you have a sound pavement with some cracking or open paving joints, our hot rubber crack sealing can save your asphalt from freeze & thaw damage.  If needed our crews will blow out the cracks with a combination compressed air and a hot flame torch.  This process removes any debris & vegetation and at the same time drying the walls of the crack with the flame.

The opened joint or crack is then sealed with hot rubber and the excess is squeegeed flat so snow plows don’t scrape off or pull out crack sealer as readily.

This material is consistent with what is used on city and state work.

Patching

The need for patching is often caused by lack of preventative maintenance.   If cracks are left open to weather elements such as moisture from rain or snow along with de-icing solutions, these cracks enlarge because of freeze and thaw cycles.  The Midwest averages 20 freeze and thaw cycles each winter.  Each time this happens, open cracks widen with ground movement.  A high concentration of cracks in a small area becomes alligatored, which is broken and loose asphalt that looks much like a puzzle.  These loose pieces pop out and become potholes.   Our crews can install asphalt cold patch during the winter months or hot mix asphalt during the paving season.

The proper method of repair would be to saw cut the perimeter of the hole and remove asphalt and compact stone base.  Then our crews install new asphalt in the cavity. If more than half of pavement is alligatored, repaving should be considered.

Our crack sealing season starts March 15th and ends Nov. 15th.  Call today to get your free estimate at 419-531-1791 or click the button below.
